Passing the Torch: American Legion Post 603 Installs New Leadership
In a ceremony steeped in tradition, the California Forty and Eight Officers (seated) installed the 2024-25 Officers of the historic American Legion Manuel L. Quezon Post 603 in Vallejo on July 9th. The event was marked by the presence of key figures, including Adjutant Paul Del Rosario, Nestor Aliga (proxy for Finance Manny Concepcion), Post Commander Raymond Hart, Gladys Ellison (proxy for Service Officer Warlito Moises), Eli Cabugao (proxy for Sergeant-at-Arms Joselito Lagman), and Vice Commander Greg Marro. The occasion also saw U.S. Army Sergeant Major Ellison being presented with Women Veterans certificates of appreciation by Commander Hart, recognizing her dedicated service.
Smooth Transition: U.S. Coast Guard Station Vallejo Welcomes New Leadership
On July 10th, the Sector San Francisco Commanding Officer, U.S. Coast Guard Captain Jordan Baldueza, officiated the change of command at Station Vallejo. Boatswain Chief Warrant Officer-2 Tyler Goss handed over the reins to Boatswain's Mate Chief Petty Officer Sean Baker. During the previous fiscal year, Station Vallejo had a remarkable record, conducting 140 search and rescue operations, saving or assisting 34 lives, and carrying out 148 law enforcement boardings.

Investing in the Future: Friends of the Dixon May Fair Award ,000 in Agricultural Scholarships
The Friends of the Dixon May Fair have once again demonstrated their commitment to supporting the next generation of agricultural leaders. Nine Solano County residents majoring in agricultural fields were awarded a total of ,000 in scholarships through the Donnie and Tootie Huffman Scholarship Program. The program, named after the Vacaville couple who established it, honors the memory of Donnie Huffman, the founding president who passed away in June 2023, and continues to be guided by Tootie Huffman's involvement as a scholarship committee judge.Among the scholarship recipients, Sam Esperson, a 2022 graduate of Rio Vista High School and a student at California Polytechnic University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo, was awarded the prestigious ,000 Donnie Huffman Memorial Scholarship, the highest honor in the program. Other notable recipients include Massimo Menicou of Vacaville, Natalie Victorine of Dixon, and Elena Mendonsa of Vacaville, who received awards ranging from ,000 to ,000. The program also recognized students pursuing their education at community colleges, with Cole Jacobson of Dixon High School receiving the ,500 Jack Hopkins Memorial Scholarship.

Soroptimist International of Benicia, a global volunteer organization dedicated to empowering women and girls, held its annual Awards and Installation Dinner, honoring remarkable individuals and their contributions to the community.The event celebrated the achievements of scholarship recipients from Benicia High School and Liberty High School, including Elizabeth Beauparlant, Kendall Brazeal Ross, Daniel Lee, Aaliyah Blackmon, and Ahmari Ferguson. The prestigious Live Your Dream Award, which provides resources to women who are the primary financial supporters of their families, was presented to Nizet Angulo.The Ruby Award, recognizing a non-Soroptimist woman who inspires and encourages other women, was awarded to Mary Hand of Benicia Magazine for her invaluable support and involvement in the club's projects.Additional accolades were bestowed upon Michele Mummey, who received a Fellowship Award, Sissy Coffeen as the recipient of a Laurel Society Award, and Devon O'Shea, who was honored as Soroptimist of the Year.The event also marked the installation of the new board for the coming year, led by Patty Gavin as the incoming President. Joining her on the board are Vice Presidents-Elect Devon O'Shea and Robin Silver, Vice President Sissy Coffeen, Treasurers Bonnie Silveria and Ginny Fontaine, Secretary Libbey McKendry, and first and second-year Directors Heather McLaughlin and Helen Kennedy-Lazar.
