Empowering North Carolina Educators: Campbell University's EPF Institute Boosts Financial Literacy

In a strategic partnership with the North Carolina Council on Economic Education (NCCEE), Campbell University's Lundy-Fetterman School of Business hosted the annual Economic & Personal Finance (EPF) Institute, a transformative program that equips high school teachers with the knowledge and resources to enhance financial literacy among their students. This intensive week-long initiative, held from June 24-28 in Raleigh, brought together a diverse group of educators from across the state, united in their commitment to preparing the next generation for financial success.

Unlocking the Path to Financial Empowerment

Addressing the Growing Demand for Financial Literacy

The EPF Institute's significance cannot be overstated, as it responds to the recent state mandates requiring high school students to pass a course in economics and personal finance for graduation, beginning with the Class of 2024. This shift reflects a growing recognition of the critical importance of financial literacy, with 35 states now having implemented similar requirements, a significant increase from just twelve states in 2022. By equipping teachers with the necessary knowledge and resources, the institute aims to empower students to navigate the complex financial landscape with confidence and make informed decisions that will shape their economic well-being.

Fostering Collaborative Learning and Professional Development

The EPF Institute's approach is highly interactive and case-oriented, led by experienced master teachers. Participants engaged in dynamic workshops that covered all EPF Standards, utilizing a diverse array of online resources, including ECON Ed Link, Ted Talks, NPR for Economics, and the Stock Market Game. Virtual guest speakers and a panel from the financial services industry further enriched the learning experience, providing practical insights and enhancing the teachers' professional development.

Empowering Educators, Transforming Students' Lives

Upon completion of the program, participants earn a professional development certificate and gain access to comprehensive lesson plans and digital resources to implement in their classrooms. This comprehensive support system ensures that the knowledge and skills acquired during the institute are seamlessly integrated into the educational experience of their students.

Investing in North Carolina's Future

Since June 2020, NCCEE has invested a remarkable 3,850 in North Carolina teachers, along with ,353 for substitute teacher reimbursements. These funds have supported the training of 1,805 educators through the 40-hour EPF Institute, with an impressive 95% of attendees passing the test of Economic Literacy and 90% obtaining the W!se Financial Literacy Certification. The impact of this investment is far-reaching, as it benefits approximately 309,810 students annually, particularly those in schools with low to moderate-income populations.

Campbell University's Commitment to Economic Education

"I am proud of Campbell University's pivotal role in helping with certifying teachers statewide in partnership with NCCEE," said Dr. Shahriar Mostashari, Director of the Center for Financial Literacy & Economic Education (CFLEE) at Campbell Business.
