Resilient Clinton High School Lady Dark Horses Secure Thrilling Victory Against Triton Lady Hawks

In a tightly contested non-conference match, the Clinton High School Lady Dark Horse tennis team showcased their determination and resilience, overcoming a tough challenge from the 3A/4A Triton Lady Hawks to secure a 5-4 victory on their home courts.

Facing a Formidable Opponent

The Clinton High School Lady Dark Horse tennis team faced a formidable opponent in the Triton Lady Hawks, who had proven themselves to be a competitive force in the region. Despite the previous day's non-conference loss, the Lady Dark Horses were determined to bounce back and make their mark on the home court.

As the match got underway, the singles play unfolded, with the Lady Hawks taking the lead by a score of 4-2. Undeterred, the Lady Dark Horses knew they had a mountain to climb, as they now had to win all three doubles matches to secure the overall victory.

"Going into the match, we knew Triton was going to be a competitive team, and we were going to have our hands full," said Ginger Rivenbark, the head coach of the Clinton High School Lady Dark Horses.

Rebuilding and Retooling for Success

The Lady Dark Horses' road to success this season has not been without its challenges, as they bid farewell to seven seniors, four of whom were part of the starting lineup. However, Rivenbark has assembled a young, but talented, team that is eager to prove their worth.

"This year, we lost seven seniors to graduation, four of whom were on our starting lineup," Rivenbark explained. "This season, we have two seniors who played on last year's top-six team, Emily Edgerton and Lilly Williams. The rest of the line-up includes another senior, Zannah Royal, along with juniors April Sinclair and Mady Avery, and sophomore Alli Naylor."

Despite the team's youth, Rivenbark is confident in their ability to succeed, thanks to the leadership and guidance of the upper-classmen. "We have a young team, but we have the leadership of our upper classmen to guide and mold them," she added.

Nail-biting Conclusion and Impressive Comeback

As the match progressed, the Lady Dark Horses found themselves facing a daunting task – they had to win all three doubles matches to secure the overall victory. The number two and number three doubles teams fought hard, securing wins for the Lady Dark Horses, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion.

The number one doubles team, consisting of Edgerton and Sinclair, engaged in a fierce battle with their Triton counterparts. The match was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team able to gain complete control. Just when it seemed the Lady Dark Horses were on the ropes, they rallied and fought back, ultimately prevailing in a tiebreaker, 8-6.

"Both Clinton and Triton struggled to gain control throughout the final match of the night, with neither team gaining complete control. When one team would rally and gain momentum, their opposition would bounce back and do the same," Rivenbark recounted.

With the thrilling victory in the number one doubles match, the Clinton High School Lady Dark Horses emerged victorious, winning the overall series 5-4.

Resilience, Teamwork, and the "Dark Horse Village"

Rivenbark attributed the Lady Dark Horses' success to a combination of factors, including the team's resilience, their dedication to the sport, and the unwavering support of the "Dark Horse Village."

"Like most sports, tennis is 80 percent mental and 20 percent physical," Rivenbark said. "When you get statistics, or anything really, in your head instead of the game at hand, you lose focus. After singles play, our girls saw their mistakes and opportunities to gain the comeback."

Rivenbark also praised the team's parents, assistant coaches, and the school's athletic department for their unwavering support. "I am very blessed to have a great group to work with. First our players. These young ladies want to learn, play, and represent Clinton High School. They have spirit and determination," she said.

The head coach also acknowledged the importance of the "Dark Horse Village," the dedicated fans who provide encouragement and support, both in person and through social media. "Their kind words impact our team! We would not have a successful season without this support! Unless you live it, you don't realize how much goes into an extracurricular activity, like high school sports. It truly takes a village to encourage and support each other. We love our Dark Horse Village. Dark Horse Strong."
